SAMUEL DE CHAMPLAIN~

Questions:

1 a. Find a picture of Samuel De Champlain. What does he look like? Explain the picture in 5-8 sentences.

This picture is a ketch for Samuel De Champlain. He is not a good looking person. He had a long beard under his nose and face. He has curl long hair and a little bit short bangs. Maybe he was wear his navigation clothing or his work suits. I imaging that he was on the other place which is far from his hometown.

This curl long hair man is named Samuel de Champlain, he was a French explorer and navigator who mapped much of northeastern North America and started a settlement in Quebec. He was born in Brouage, Saintonge, on the bay of Biscay, in 1567, died in Quebec, 25 Dec., 1635. His father influenced him a lot , he was a ship-captain, so that’s why the son received a careful education as a navigator. He entered the army and became quartermaster of cavalry earlier, then is about his uncle who had served in France acting as pilot-general of the Spanish fleets, conducted back to their own country the Spanish soldiers.

2. What is his relationship with Canada? Why is he important to Canada?

Samuel de Champlain was the founder of Quebec city as well as the explorer most known for exploring Quebec and opening up the area to fur trading. He founded settlements in many areas including Quebec city, Montreal and Tadoussac. And he opened up trade with the natives and established basic government in Quebec. Without him, a lot of bridges would have no name.

3. When did he explore? What was happening during history at this time?

Before his first exploration, during 1587 to Mar,15th, 1603, he was also prepare a lots to his career. He made his first voyage to Canada in Mar,15th, 1603. Samuel de Champlain set sail for Quebec from Honfleur, France. There were two ships on the voyage. Champlain's instructions were to retrace Cartier's route from over a half-century earlier and to begin setting up trade relations with the Iroquoians and with any other Indian Nations he encountered.

The red line is represents the explorer's route between 1609 and 1613. At the beginning, he started from almost Quebec, one was along the ocean to Montreal, then to Ottawea.The other route was from Quebec to the Richelieu then to the Lake Champlain.

The blue line is reveals the explorer's route between 1615 and 1616. He went to Lake Nipissing from Ottawa, then changed to left hand to Georgian Bay. In here, they have another two different of routes, one was along the edge of the land from Midland, Nottawasaga Bay, Colingwood, Thornbury, Meaford, finally up to the land nearly Markdale.The other one was start at Midland to Lake Simcoe, then pass the land through Lindsay, Peterborough, Believille, Picton, Lake Ontario to Oswego. Turn left to along the Mexico edge crossed Lake Ontario to Napanee, go straight up to the near fo Perth Smiths Falls then dwon to Bobcaygeon.

5. Why did he explore? What were his reasons for exploration?

For his explopration, he thought a lots! He wanted to find more land, some of them is for the French people who wanted to make a permanent settlement. He also wanted to get to the Pacific Ocean in very fast way after he found the Quebec city. For this reason he started to make a map for the North America. This is propbably all of the reason that why he explored.


6. How did he explore? What transportation methods did he use?

He used the ship. In question three, I explained that what happening during the explotarion. At his first voyage. There were two of this kind of ships. According to these, they supported him lots and lots. He got his goal, for Quebec, also for the map. He was very successful. after that, he becomes famous.

It is represents his shadow from this statue is cover the whole Quebec land. He is these place's mother~Every square meters are his baby who is growing up.
